Gammelstan
Welcome to the cultural heritage site of Gammelstan in Norrboda, Ore!
Gammelstan [ˈɡamːɛlˌstɑːn] = “the old town”
Gammelstan is unique in the Siljan region and throughout Dalarna, as the buildings still stand on their original sites.
This offers visitors a vivid impression of what farms in Ore and other parts of Dalarna looked like 300 years ago — and even further back in time.
Gammelstan consists of two farms, Nissnissgården and Finngården, located on opposite sides of the old village road.
A total of 28 buildings have been preserved, the oldest of which are believed to date back to the 16th century. The ownership of the two farms can be traced back to the 17th century.
In 1966, the Swedish National Heritage Board declared Gammelstan a listed historic site. Since 1972, the entire area has been owned and maintained by the Ore Local Heritage Association.
Opening Hours
Gammelstan is open throughout the summer for visitors to explore on their own.
During events, the buildings are open, and there are usually coffee and cake available as well as guided tours.

There is a donation box in the left courtyard. Admission fees may apply during events.
Guided Tours
From 27 June to 1 August, we offer guided tours every Saturday at 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm.
Our volunteer guides speak some English. Please feel free to ask — we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Costume Museum
Orekammarn
The Orekammarn showcases folk costumes from Ore. Several variations and other examples of textile craftsmanship are on display. A large glass cabinet and pull-out drawers invite visitors to explore. Enlarged photographs are also exhibited, showing how the costumes were traditionally worn.
Exhibition
Trädristningar
Trädristningar are carvings found on trees and buildings, made by shepherd girls on the summer mountain pastures (fäbodar) or on their way there. They tell stories of daily life and are a unique form of folk art in Ore. The museum displays around 30 well-preserved carvings with explanatory signs that provide insight into the fäbod culture — a valuable part of the world’s cultural heritage.
Language Heritage
Oremålshörnan
The Oremålshörnan (“Oremål” means the local dialect of Ore, and “hörnan” means corner) offers 56 audio recordings from the 1940s featuring this dialect. You will also find literature and a dictionary of Oremål here.

Good to know
Due to its historic buildings and uneven/sloping terrain, Gammelstan is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. The Orekammarn (museum across the street) is wheelchair accessible and equipped with an accessible restroom.
Dogs must be kept on a leash throughout the entire site.
Smoking and open flames are prohibited anywhere on the premises.
